Not content with its share of the casual lunch crowd, Themis has recently opened up the second story of its building to offer a spacious dining area specifically for large groups that might attend a conference or a reunion. Downstairs, however, is where the casual diner will sit and - unless harangued by a troop of those who have booked the upstairs location – one has all the pleasures of a quiet café near the heart of downtown. Hanging from the pastel yellow walls are maps and photos themed on representations of the old worlds. This same sense of tradition carries through to the warm and welcoming reception that bar staff and waiters offer all guests who direct guests to their comfortable and fashionable black tables and chairs. The crowd comprises of a number of regular lunch diners from the nearby business district as well as a few students from the nearby University of Salvador. The modern menu offers selections from a light snack through to full meals. The huge selection of pasta and sauce combinations are only matched by the sandwich choices. A popular favourite is the personal sized pizzas which range from the basic Muzzarela ($AR6) to ‘with everything’ ($AR8.30). A coffee may be sipped at for $AR2.50, and the traditional drink of mate can be selected for the same price. For those eating on the run, there is a good selection of pre-made pastries. In summer, while the chef tans at Mar del Plata, the menu is reduced to food which can be served without too much fuss. —Themis Bar-Resto review by Murdoch Stephens
