Stepping in from the bustling Palermo streets to an intimate table or cozy couch in Terreo can be likened to taking tea at your favorite friend’s house. Usually when a hip, modern restaurant takes over a mansion’s domestic floorplan, major renovations follow. Terreo, however, has kept the original space in tact and just filled it with a mix of comfy sofas, beanbag chairs, and candle-lit café tables. The hallways, doorways, old fashioned wall moldings, and traditional staircase all make it feel like a night at grandma’s while the hip modern light fixtures, groovy abstract art, and lovely staff makes it feel like your too-cool friend’s dorm room. The menu is mostly café style foods with scrumptious salads, sandwiches, and soups on offer for about $8-16AR with more substantial dinner dishes ranging from shrimp or vegetarian crepes to traditional pastas for about $12-$20AR. The friendly staff makes you feel at home and everything is served with flair. The selection of bruschetas is definitely worth trying. The list of hot chocolate and sweets makes it an inviting place for afternoon tea though the weekends leaves Palermo stowed with hungry shoppers and empty tables can be scarce. Those coming from other barrios may find Terreo overpriced for what is on offer, but that is the price you pay for a coveted Palermo Viejo zip code. A sign in the bathroom reads that condoms are also available if the need should arise confirming that as evening slips away into night, Terreo keeps up the pace. The reasonably priced wine and cocktail list doesn’t hurt either. For those with groups or a need for intimacy, Terreo offers livings privados or private living rooms in the back. The cost is $15AR extra per person for a cozy, personal space and reservations are always advised. —Terreo review by Clare Nisbet
