Slightly east of Congreso, tucked between various construction projects, awaits the Tenedor Libre Buffet. There is nothing exciting about the exterior – they solely rely on bloated block letters on the window to pull in customers. It is a simple game – all the food you can eat for one price. But Tenedor Libre Buffet is not a glorified salad bar: it offers an enormous range of dishes including deserts, parilla (barbecue), and all the other Argentine favourites. Enter the store and search out a table. There are about one hundred seats, blocked together for the most efficient use of space. The only exuberant décor is a schist water-feature constructed in an intriguing ‘look-what-I-made, Daddy’ style. Once seated, the waiter approaches to take drink orders. Customers must purchase a drink to have access to the cheapest buffet price. A Pepsi goes for $AR4, and any of the typical litre beer range for $8AR or $9AR. Add this to the weekdays $8.50AR or weekend $9.50AR for the minimum price. Next, customers line up for a plate. Many plates and the odd glass have chips or cracks in them. But remember, the Tenedor Libre run a quantity based service, so forget about the kitchen wear, and forget about the parilla chef who also seems to be scoffing all he can eat, and revel in the construction of a food pyramid on a grungy plate. All levels of the healthy-eating food pyramid are catered for from seaweed, to French fries, to ice cream. But remember the two golden rules of all you can eat: don’t waste space on the bread, and always leave room for desert. Personal favourites of the author are the chichurri (find it in front of the barbecue) and the ice-cream (limited to one portion per person). —Tenedor Libre Buffet | All you can eat buffet review by Murdoch Stephens
