There is absolutely no way that the casual tourist will ever stumble onto Spangher. Located on the northern edge of the already removed barrio Belgrano, Spangher is plumped on a quiet corner in a residential district with not another business but urban sprawl for blocks around. A trip to Spangher is a trip to the Argentina of dreams: couples staring at one another over Spangher’s self-produced rubia (blonde), rojo (red), and negra (black) beers; young men drawn from the surrounding neighbourhood to sketch pictures, play on the piano in the corner, or write whimsical poems; the subject of many of these young men’s affections – the three beautiful daughters of the proprietor who also work as waitresses. Spangher is basically the setting for a romantic novel about hard-earned love, drunken woe, and slow-paced, satisfied living.

In the warmer seasons, the windows open to the tables on the street. Sinatra wafts from the stereo. Family photos decorate the space beside the bar. Wooden tables and chairs score the history of the location and its thousand upon thousands of visitors. And this far out of the city, no-one is in much of a hurry to go someplace else.

The artesenal beers are the highlight of a trip to Spangher. By asking politely, it is possible to get a taste of all three, along with some salted snack before making a decision on which colour suits the mood. The quality varies according to the usual issues of beer-making: how fresh the keg is, how far through the keg is, and the quality of the original ingredients, but every night at least two of the varieties will be winners. To accompany one's thirst, a selection of cheeses, meats and olives are also available. Once visited, I would challenge any visitor to not visit Spangher a second time, whether for the charm of the daughters, or for the quality of the beer.
