Buenos Aires is filled with quick, homemade food options. The empanada and coke culture is a big part of the charm. One of the greatest contributors to each neighborhood are its rotiserías, which is a general word for a place with homemade, cooked dinners that can be heated and taken to go, or delivered around the surrounding streets. San Carlos is a gem and a great quick dinner option. They offer delivery without charge, making it particularly great for backpackers staying in nearby hostels. San Carlos was named for the barrio where the owner grew up. It is small and unassuming – little more than a display table and a few microwaves. Make no mistake, however, the food here is the real deal and a great alternative to being invited over to dinner at an Argentine’s house. The food is cooked fresh daily and reheated. All of the food is regional and well priced. Delicious empanadas are $1AR each while giant milanesas, pastas, arroz con pollo and mountainous helpings of tartas are $4-$6AR. You would have a hard time spending more than $6AR on a meal here and they never leave you wanting. San Carlos is one of many rotiserías in Buenos Aires’ countless barrios. Those who don’t make it here should find an equivalent nearby and hope it tastes just like mom’s food – or like San Carlos. —San Carlos Rotisería & Pizzería review by Clare Nisbet
