“Do you remember?” the Remember Jazz Pub asks. “How could I forget?” sings Sinatra from the jukebox. And that is about as close to Jazz as the intrepid visitor gets. Even though Remember Jazz Pub features live shows from Thursday to Sunday, the majority of performances are rock and theatre. At other times, the sounds are a sweet combination of the jukeboxe's international and local rock (AC/DC, Bersuit, Led Zeppelin) and the tinny ring of the radio from behind the bar. For $2AR guests can be the DJ for two tracks, although I struggled to find enough interesting music to get me beyond that first investment. Perhaps a Friday night in the middle of January is not the best time of year for the bar owner. I am convinced he not only hates me, but any other customer that enters his establishment. I guess it could be called a punk-rock ethos. But at least he has character, represented by a balding head surrounded by a thinning pony-tail, and a sultry demeanor. He wanders about carrying a microphone as if he would burst into karaoke, but none of the songs that guests have chosen are to his liking. Basically, his foul mood is your fault. The décor is rather cluttered with photos of previous performances on the premises, upcoming gig posters, paintings of various random stars, and plenty of dusty pub-paraphernalia. Oddly, with it’s prominent bar seating Remember Jazz Pub evokes memories of a pint-sized British pub. A litre of Isenbeck sells for $9AR. Don’t bother asking for a menu: the closest thing to a meal is a small bowl of salty snacks, and these are available only upon request. —Remember Jazz Pub review by Murdoch Stephens
