A visit to Plaza Mayor is like a trip back in time to old colonial Spain – without the inconvenience of having to leave Buenos Aires.  With all the fanfare and decadence of the Spanish court, heavy table-clothed tables covered with thick cut wine glasses cover the tiled floor.  Antique fans and period paintings sit amongst antique mirrors and flamenco shawls on the dark red walls.

Standing tall, its red and yellow flag proudly hoisted above the door, Plaza Mayor represents the Spanish corner of a cluster of upper-end restaurants in this bustling little corner of Montserrat.  Inside its heavy double doors, immaculately dressed senoritas greet diners and waiters in long-sleeved white shirts bustle about attending tables.

The menu naturally follows a traditionally Spanish theme.  Alongside paella, stuffed peppers and stews it also boasts an impressive variety of fresh fish and seafood options.  Catering to an upper-market clientele some of its more exotic dishes include seafood spaghetti $30AR, shrimp soufflé $39AR and octopus $68AR.  Prices are set mid to high range with the house speciality, Valencian paella (paella of chicken and fresh seafood) at a princely $72AR.

With its heavily traditional style and higher prices Plaza Mayor tends to attract an older crowd.  Its extensive wine list and quality seafood make it a popular choice for well-healed diners and more formal groups.  Lunchtimes and evenings are regularly busy and reservations are recommended.  As the commitment to tradition goes this is food fit for a Spaniard.  If the prices are not prohibitive and the exotic taste of the continent in ornate surroundings appeals then look no further.
