Nacional sits amidst the many traditional cafes in San Telmo, on a quiet corner just one block from Defensa and the heart of the Sunday artisan fair. One of the funkier resto-bars that has sprung up in San Telmo, it gives the younger hip crowd an alternative to tango and bowtie-clad wait staff. Retro light blue, brown, and gold striped walls, shabby antique mirrors, and old wooden tables accented by chic, modern designs (such as the large circle mirror suspended on the back wall and half moon marble bar) all come together in perfect harmony. Funky jazz music grooves in the air as diners enjoy the weekly menu del dia which includes a drink, main dish, dessert, and coffee all for $15AR. The friendly (but not overly friendly) employees with their dreadlocks and piercings confirm that Nacional is hipster from wall to wait staff. The menu is well presented and lists its assortment of starters ($6-$30), homemade pastas ($12-$20), and mains ($21-30) in Spanish and English. Innovative desserts such as sweet potato jelly with cheese are an excellent way to stave off that after meal sweet tooth. The wine list is small, catering to the red wine lovers of the world with bottles ranging from $20AR-$70AR and glasses from $7AR-$15AR. Basic gin and vodka cocktails are available for $11AR and a Stella goes for $7AR. Wednesday through Saturday evenings after the tables have been cleared live flamenco guitar or jazz add to the laid back night scene. —Nacional review by Ellie Bowman
