With a typical porteño fare and additional outside seating, McNor offers a welcome break for weary shoppers in Palermo. Photo by Jennifer Roglà.

A classic Argentine café, McNor offers a peaceful retreat from the crowded heart of Palermo’s shopping district. Frequented mainly by locals, the café is set back from Avenida Santa Fe in the residential neighborhood where Palermo meets Barrio Norte. Chocolate brown trim and small wooden tables accent the light green walls of the restaurant, an outdoor scheme reminiscent of the Jardín Botánico just a block away. McNor is perfect for working lunches with a colleague or an afternoon perusal of the local paper. Patrons often meet over coffee, or read the magazines the restaurant keeps on hand for customers.

McNor is a small café with an intimate set-up. There are about a dozen tables inside with more seating along the outside sidewalk. A bar and display case conceal the kitchen along the backside of the café, while windows line the opposing wall where each table sits. Tables are cozily close to one another, yet each maintains its privacy; a mirrored column and potted tree divide the café in half and help separate patrons’ conversations. Several televisions inside play local news stations. Outside, a large brown awning protects the popular sidewalk tables alon Scalabrini Ortiz from showers and the sun.

McNor’s homestyle offerings are typical of Argentine fare. The menu has a wide variety of breakfast, lunch, and merienda foods to choose from, along with an ample selection of coffees, teas, and alcohol. While the food is modest, the portions are large. Main dishes run between $5-15AR and include the usual café favorites such as sandwiches, healthy-sized empanadas, and lunchtime meal deals of hamburgers and fries. The staff is friendly and patient; most waiters dress casually while some don a simple striped shirt with McNor’s embroidered on the breast pocket. Located eight blocks away from the Alto Palermo shopping center and three blocks from the Scalabrini Ortiz subte station, McNor provides a welcome escape from the chaos of the surrounding city streets.
