First off, I must declare a bias and vested interest: this reviewer is a vegetarian, and borderline vegan. On the busy Avenida Córdoba two vegetarian restaurants neighbour one another in fierce competition. Well, perhaps it's not so fierce: these folks don’t like to kill. Perhaps then, on the busy Avenida Córdoba, two vegetarian restaurants neighbour one another in healthy co-existence. On the right is Lotos, a restaurant with a small health food store down the escalator, in the basement. Skirting the escalator, Lotus reveals itself to possess much more seating space than the small storefront suggests. In fact, with row upon row of tables and the selection of food already prepared, protected, and on display behind a sneeze-guard, the restaurant looks more like a food court. But wait! Not only are the staff smiling, they're joking with customers and with one another, in a pleasant manner!

The food court atmosphere is added to with smatterings of art-deco (our old friend turquoise plays a cameo in the colour scheme) and water-colour paintings of Chinese themes. Yet unlike usual food courts, the photographs of the food behind the counter actually encourage consumption. Now the staff are laughing, in a non-lecherous way!

Lotos’ menu changes daily for the six days of the week they are open. Each day offers between fourteen and twenty-two different vegitarian dishes, along with the ever-present options of a ‘balanced plate’ ($11AR) and various salads. Expect choices such as croquettes, crumbed soya patties, pasta, and chopsuey. Tofu can be subbed into any meal for an additional $1AR. To compliment the meal a wide selection of teas are on offer, as well as a few juices, water with or without gas, and local soft drinks. To finish off, there are cute heart-shaped deserts: ideal for those partners we’ve once more coaxed into healthy eating.
