The folks at Los 40 Bar de Tapas sure know their way around what they serve. In the evening, the streets of Palermo Viejo are generally quiet and dark, while bbehind the closed doors of restaurants, the party continues into the wee hours of the morning. The atmosphere at Los 40 is subdued and inviting with its red walls and modern booths stretching backwards into the elongated space. Décor is sparse but the large, old, brick oven in the back is worth a second look. While a party of 2 can easily enjoy tapas together, one gets the feeling that the restaurant was designed to provide a place for small groups of 4-6 to gather, hear each other speak, and try a variety of tastes. Tapas start around $8AR for a small bowl and larger portions cost about double. The small wine list starts at $19AR and cocktails around $12-15AR. Los 40 can explain that legend has it that the word tapa derives from the phrase “tapar el hambre” meaning to curb the hunger with a series of small portions of food to fend off the harsh effects of alcohol alone. Aficionados know that the concept has many offshoots in different parts of the world and Buenos Aires is another, enjoyable version of the idea. In the spirit of sharing, if more than 5 tapas are ordered, the house offers 3 more – and testing out a variety is almost obligatory. The menu includes a variety of dishes: chips and guacamole, sautéed mushrooms, potatoes, chicken, and sausages to name a few favorites. The list of tapas continues to include some exotic dishes including kidneys, tongue, and rabbit. —Los 40 Bar de Tapas review by Clare Nisbet
