Think sharp suits and champagne flutes, the clink of heavy cutlery on fine china and wine, wine, wine. As the name suggests, La Cava de El Querandí is the sister wine bar to the next-door Café El Querandí, and a mecca for well-heeded lunch parties and wine connoisseurs. The airy glass-panelled space is elegantly styled. Rows of wine bottles are displayed in dark wood cases on exposed, bare-brick walls. Simple stylish furniture stands on warm ceramic tiles offset by lines of sparkling, tall-stemmed glasses hanging above the bar. La Cava boasts over one hundred and forty labels of Argentine wines carefully selected from the best grapes of each region. It is thus that they are confident they can offer something to suit everyone's mood. “An equilibrated Syrah from Catamarca, a subtle Torrontes from Salta, a superb Malbec from Mendoza and an enviable patagonic Pinot Noir”. While the menu is equally enticing, La Cava is really all about the wine and the cuisine is specially elaborated to this effect. The restaurant offers reasonably priced speciality salads for around $10-12AR and excellent tapas including smoked salmon, and Spanish tortilla for between $5-10AR each. Between 5-8pm a happy hour offer includes a glass of champagne, red wine or beer accompanied by either bruschetta, empanadas or mozzarella sticks for $22AR per person. For the more upmarket wine connoisseur the “Noches de Bodega” on Thursdays and Fridays cost $60AR a head and include a five-course dinner accompanied by exquisite wines in this stylish, downtown setting. Reservations are recommended. —La Cava de El Querandí review by Tessa Pettman
