Those cheeky Argentines! After the peso crash back in 2001 shredded Argentina's economy, gringos flocked to the capital. With one surge of foreigners came a surge of foreign culture, represented by a rabbit-breeding readiness to adopt popular icons - copyrighted or not. If visitors haven’t noticed the cafés, such as Emily and They Killed Kenny, then they surely have seen thousands of t-shirts and posters bearing various Simpsons depictions: Homer as a tanguero, Homer Guevarra, Homer at Oktoberfest, dressed as an SS guard and saluting: ‘Heil Beer’. To add to the list of lawsuits is Homero Bar and Internet, a café on Avenida Córdoba dedicated to the Simpson father. Beyond the sign there is not much else Homerish about Homero Café, maybe a few posters. The crowing jewel is a painting hidden above the only computer, featuring a drunken Homer with torn Argentine colours exploding from the background.

The staff is youthful, amicable and speak not a scrap of English besides ‘Doh!’ Homero seems to have been decorated from the entry, but once customers venture beyond a vintage music poster, and a collage to the Simpsons and other cultural icons such as the Rolling Stones, it descends into ‘a boy’s bedroom’ theme – more sparse posters blue-tacked to the wall. Adding to the boys-bedroom theme, behind the bar is a garish display of liquor bottles, mirrors, and glasses.

Departing from Argentine custom, Homero offers Orange Juice and toast for breakfast. Throw in ham and cheese and it makes the breakfast special for $6.50AR. A selection of pastas and crumbed steaks re-affirms Homero’s nationalistic dedication to cuisine. Homer Simpson graces the menu with various Homer options, the most daring of which is the Homer Salad – consisting of rice, lettuce, chicken, eggs and cheese – for $5AR. People truly wishing to emulate Mr Simpson could get two quarter chickens ($8AR), wrap them together with a mixed omelette ($5AR), then melt cheese over the top ($1AR). Sorry, no Duffs, although a sign indicates otherwise. Customers settle for one of the cheapest Quilmes litres in town: $6AR.
