Furai-bo is an oasis in downtown Buenos Aires - a cool, calm sanctuary from the heat of the street.  This tranquil, Japanese haven is part sushi bar, part shrine (dedicated to recreating the world of the ancient Buddhist temples of Japan), and part restaurant serving up fine cuisine.  It’s mantra: To broadcast the true values and gastronomy of Japan, its tastes, its colours, its aromas and all the ranging variety there is in this, one of the most delicious and delicate foods in the world.

Hidden away in the middle of this bustling downtown street, from a single doorway and flight of stairs, the space opens up to reveal an ornate Buddhist shrine and light, airy restaurant.  Though relatively small, the space is expertly decorated with the beautiful detail and elegant simplicity of the Japanese culture.  Tall, painted screens bear traditional Japanese calligraphy, simple rush mats lie on the floor, and intricately woven silk covers the menus.  The running water, green leaves and dark rock of the small Zen garden in the back complete the picture of serenity.

From both traditional floor-cushioned seating or more Western tables and chairs, visitors can enjoy an impressive variety of sushi and other typical Japanese dishes.  For this typically-expensive cuisine, the prices are in fact very reasonable with four and six piece sushi plates ranging from $8AR-$20AR.  The menu del dia offers a three-course option for $18AR and includes a wide choice of sushi rolls including seafood, meat, and tofu for vegetarian diners.

On the first Wednesday of every month Furai-bo holds a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.  Visitors are invited to observe the proceedings free of charge or  partake in the experience for a $10AR charge.  Reservations are requested.  Between 7:30 and 9:30pm every Tuesday Furai-bo also offers an introduction to Buddhism, free of charge, including meditation, an introduction ritual and discussion on the teachings of Buddha.  It is requested that attendance is confirmed in advance.
