Competition for the business crowd on the corner of Uruguay and Viamonte is tight. Forum tries to court the crowd who demand quick service in a tidy location with a slightly awkward combination of the two. From the exterior, cheap laminated photos promise the kind of speed usually associated with McDonalds, while the interior gleams with white table cloths, and stylish menus. Fortunately, the two themes are fused beneath the popular and garish theme of art deco. At Forum the art deco theme is less futuristic than at neighbouring Eureka, but come prepared for a liberal attitude to the colour turquoise, and a giant gold-plated clock ticking away towards the end of lunch break. Although this restaurant is on a busy street corner, a few pots of well placed greenery afford privacy, at the same time as cutting down on street-watching opportunities. To be even more removed from the city scene and get as close as possible to the hard-working air conditioning, spiral up the stairway past the last table on the ground floor. For those on a hectic schedule a range of pre-made pastries, sandwiches, and empanadas await. Customers with a little more time can ponder over a range of food which is decidedly Argentine with a few surprises. Those who feel they are victims of the local penchant for white bread can rejoice at the range of sandwiches available on four different types of bread, including wholemeal and pita. Three elaborate salads which serve two are available for between $AR12 and $AR15, although all diners are charged a table service of $AR1.50. Those looking at bang-for-the-buck ought to turn to the final page where the selection of the day resides. The early evening crowd is also catered for with a range of exotic liquors and a competent bar staff eager to show off their mixing skills. Or simply choose a seat at the eclectic bar and toast another day in South America with a handle of Quilmes for $AR4.50. —Forum review by Murdoch Stephens
