![]() Sushi is growing in popularity in Buenos Aires. Federico offers it up alongside local dishes. Photo by Clare Nisbet. Federico is the embodiment of cool circa 1989. If you were wearing a white sport jacket with a skinny tie and walking off the set of Miami Vice, the neon blue lights of Federico’s bar would be calling your name. Times and styles have changed just a touch and Federico has been left behind a little rendering it a bit sad with it’s too-loud bad music (unless you really dig Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men) and it’s strange “International” menu – meaning porteño, Japanese, and totally surreal. Despite it’s lacking in the style department, Federico manages to offer up some reasons to stop by. It’s a large space with a roomy upstairs and creative furnishing from high, barstool type window seats to cozy corner couches. Bread arrives warm at the table with cream cheese and the porteño main dishes are cheap enough with a range of meat, chicken, fish, and pasta dishes. But the neon sign outside reads “Sushi” and I think that is why most curious pedestrians stop by. It’s not the greatest sushi in the world but it is sushi and that is exciting enough, right? There are about 10 different rolls, makimoto, nigiris, and sashimi to choose from and while they won’t blow your mind – they will arrive looking good enough to eat. There is also a wok menu from which you can take your pick of rice, meats, and noodles. Just remember to be suspicious of places that specialize in both risotto and tempura lobster rolls. —Federico review by Clare Nisbet
