The iconic face of Emily greets diners at this casual cafe and bar in barrio Once. Photo by Greg Roden.

Located to the east of Once, occupying a prominent corner only a few blocks walk from Congress, sits the Emily Café and Bar. The café is themed upon the stern-featured face of Emily: an icon borne of the States and bordering on Gothic. But this is not another exercise in brands broadening their product scope: some would bring up intellectual property rights; others would simply call it a fan's paean to a beloved image.

Emily’s interior keeps with the colour scheme of her character and sends customers searching for synonyms for purple: plum, lavender, violet, lilac. The small space makes way for a range of seating options: at the bar, in a booth in the main room, at a table in a secondary room, and a few tables scattered beyond the outer door. The business' busyness on one of their days with a later closing is mirrored by an eclectic décor: a Scream-mask and cutlass from a recent Halloween party, verdant photographs of rural Argentina, rows of empty whiskey boxes and bottles, and a photo-board illustrating the best parties of the year before. Check out a Saturday night for acoustic music.

Apart from the usual array of pizzas, pastas and empanadas is a strong selection of sandwiches, salads, and quiches. Their chef, however, is quick to point out what makes Emily special – displayed beside the bar are jars of Argentine beef pickled with the ‘best pickles of Patagonia’. He is just as keen to show off the specially smoked artesian salami and Argentine caviar which takes the menu beyond Italy and into the agricultural heart of the nation. As Emily is a decent stroll from the city center, prices are accordingly low. And with as little space as Emily offers, perhaps the best option is an early dinner, before settling in for some pre-club drinks.
