From the minds behind 2 of Buenos Aires’ busiest and most popular Mexican Restaurants, Maria Felix, comes El Salto de las Ranas (The jump of the frogs) bringing a little spice to Recoleta. In true Recoleta style, one of the most noticeable qualities of this restaurant is the steep prices – but as the owners know, in this neighborhood you can get away with it. Even with it’s 20 or so tables downstairs, and the same again on the upper level, empty tables are a rare site after 10pm. Those who cave in to their hunger pangs and drop out of the line for cheap cazuelasat Cumaná next door also contribute to the lively, sizable crowd. As a Mexican restaurant, however, El Salto leaves a lot to be desired. Quesadillas (flour tortillas filled with cheese and/or meat) are overpriced at $8AR and while the fajitas (choice of meat grilled with fresh peppers, onions, etc.) almost taste like the real thing, they are served with an excruciatingly stingy spoonful of rice and a spoonful of beans making them difficult to share and burning a hole in your wallet at $18-30AR. When a Mexican restaurant offers crepes and pasta on the menu for those allergic to even the idea of a little spice, you know you are probably going to get an experience that is far from authentic. Despite its faults, care has been taken in the construction and the space is inviting. The staff is friendly and attentive. However, I can’t help but recommend trying to hang in there with the line at Cumaná until this place tries harder to provide an authentically Mexican restaurants experience. —El Salto de las Ranas review by Clare Nisbet
