Hidden away in a quiet Palermo side-street this rustic eatery offers authentic north-western Argentinean cooking at affordable prices. The setting is tranquil and informal and the old-fashioned farming tools that adorn the walls give Cocina Regional 1810 a feel of a comfortable, unassuming farmhouse. Like a typical home away from home neighborhood hang-out, it is usually frequented by local families and couples. The specialties on offer include among others, a rich selection of authentic Empanadas. According to the menu they’re the tastiest in Buenos Aires and at only $1.60AR a piece, there’s no reason not to test this claim to its fullest. On weekdays a promotional offer of three empanadas and a glass of house wine for $9AR is further incentive to gorge on these juicy oven-baked pastries. The entrées can be summed up as stews, stews and more stews. Fans of the Argentina’s rural cuisine will find all their favorites including; the national dish Locro, a hearty mix of beef, spicy sausage, beans and pumpkin, as well as Lentejas, an equally robust bacon and lentil based dish. The house recommendation is Carbonada, a sweet beef stew with corn and peaches. There are also Tamales as well as a selection of pies on offer. Served piping hot in deep earthenware dishes these meals are all great belly warmers on a cold winter’s day. Entrées range in price from $6AR to $9AR. The no-frills wine selection is exclusively Argentinean. Bottles are between $15.50AR and $22AR. —Cocina Regional 1810 review by Johan Jensen
