Below the sign with the pronounced lactating teats lies the bohemian Club Amigos de la Vaca Profana, or simply, club for friends of the profane cow. The club is an intimate space where performers seem to know staff and audience alike – the people congregating around the bar after a performance, you can suppose, are these friends of the Profane Cow. Yet the club also greet outsiders with enthusiasm and a contribución of around diego pesos ($10AR), although for special events entrance can double. Vaca Profana puts on shows six nights of the week: cinema, theatre, or live music, and often in weekly cycles featuring the same performers. The entertainment begins at an hour when most Argentines are only beginning to think about dinner. The reason? Vaca Profana also has amiguitos, that is to say, friends of the profane cow who are children. It seems the bohemians have finally gotten over their nihilism, have chosen to breed, and choose to take their children out for a night of entertainment also. Amazingly, all of the children are extraordinarily well behaved, and more or less blend into the crowd.

Sporting a candle-lit ambience, the small space is made the most of by a fire escape-like balcony. These seats offer the best view of the well-proportioned stage, which, during my visit, held seven performers. Whoever has set-up the sound-system has paid a lot more attention than the average café owner, with top-quality acoustics maintained for the entire evening. The Profane Cow theme speckles the décor, most noticeably in the faux raw-hide menus with a wide range of vegetarian options amongst the usual pizzas, pastas and sandwiches. A litre of Budweiser goes $8AR (with free peanuts and free peanut refills), while a coffee will sting you for three, and a portion of mozzarella pizza a whopping two pesos. Vaca Profana is the perfect place for an entertaining, cabaret-style dinner, but make sure to get there early or call ahead to make a reservation as the best spots quickly fill.
