Paris meets Buenos Aires at this authentic Parisian brasserie located directly in between Plaza de Mayo and San Telmo. Porteños from the central business district lunch with an assortment of hungry post-antiquing tourists while Parisians themselves even deem Petanque a worthy enough spot to spend an evening. Under a red awning, French parlor music serenades soon-to-be diners as they enter through double doors wallpapered with articles touting the restaurants impressive number of gastronomical achievements since opening only one year ago. The large yet simple restaurants area is bright and airy with white table cloths, pale yellow walls and framed old fashioned French adverts hung curiously above eye level. The music of conversations fills the air. From any seat in the house it’s hard not to miss the two life-sized, gilded statutes mounted confidently behind the bar. Two golden men grasp a small ball in their hand forever posed in a game of Petanque - a French ball game similar to bocce. The incredibly friendly and multi-lingual staff serve well-priced, beautifully presented plates of French culinary staples such as nicoise salad $12AR, beef bourguignon $24AR, and profiteroles $16AR as well as an assortment of dishes that include Argentine influenced ingredients. Vegetarians have fewer options but will surely please the taste buds with one of the many seafood appetizers, fish or pasta entrees. An excellent selection of Argentine wines make up the majority of the wine list. Bottles range anywhere from $22AR-$140AR. And of course there’s champagne. What would a brasserie be without a little bubbly? —Brasserie Petanque review by Ellie Bowman
