Though there is no dividing wall, Azapar is really two separate rooms. On the left, retro-chic, multi-colored, circular lampshades hang from the low ceiling over each table, creating a relaxed intimacy. Every wall panel is also painted a different solid color and is adorned with either a pseudo-fresco painting or one in a frame.

This side is more the “resto” in the “resto-bar” equation. Across the row of burgundy, riveted-metal columns that functions as a partition, the bar takes shape. Here the proprietors of Azapar have attained that elusive quality of light that may be called perfect: not too bright but not too dark, and everyone somehow looks more attractive. This side has a 15 ft. ceiling, exposed brick wall, and enormous windows looking out on 5 de Julio (aka “the cutest little calle in Buenos Aires”). The dark, varnished wood floor and tables n’ chairs are the same throughout. Regardless of where you sit, the gracious staff serves up decent food and inexpensive drinks from a standard Porteno menu. For a snack, have a couple Azapar empanadas, filled with mozzarella, provolone, and longaniza sausage.

Or, garlic fries!
