Of all the restaurants and cafés that surround Plaza Güemes, Velvet is the most stylish. The design is modern and elegant with high ceilings and plenty of light.  The walls are painted a deep red and there’s an abundance of large mirrors with dark wood frames.  Above the bar, a brightly colored work of contemporary art acts as a focal point for the entire space.  The wall facing the square is all glass, and the patio outside is almost as large as the interior of the venue.  The patio is covered in a large blue and red canopy, making this the ideal spot to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the area, come rain or shine.  The view of the plaza with its palm trees and picturesque church is worth a visit.

Velvet has a very extensive menu, but it’s also a great place to go for just a coffee. Resisting the temptation of the alluring silver platters of cakes and pastries on display might prove too much for most, though.  If you have come for the food there really is a lot to choose from.  Steaks, pizzas, and pasta dishes jostle for the diner’s attention in competition with a number of house specialties.  A popular recommendation is the “Raxo como en Galicia,” a potato and pork dish deliciously seasoned with garlic and herbs.  Most entrées are over $20AR, and wines cost from $15 to $40AR.  Velvet is a favored spot by families and is a particularly popular destination with fashionable Porteños taking a break from shopping on Avenida Santa Fe, only four blocks away.
