The Oldest is a great pub with a seriously late license. It has everything a local needs, from a wide selection of beers on tap, to some scrumptious food, and even a big screen tellie to watch the football on. Had it not been for a magnum bottle of Fernet on the bar, this could just as easily be Bristol as Belgrano. The classic bar room has been lavishly refurbished. The cream coloured carvings in the dark blue ceiling wouldn’t look out of place at Versailles and there’s even a sofa with a back so elaborately constructed it reaches halfway up the wall. But for all the fancy embellishments (there are honest to good cherubs on the wall!), this is still an informal and comfortable space, ideal for relaxing on a Sunday afternoon or on the way home from work. Exactly what a good pub should be! The beer selection includes all the usual suspects and some exotic guests, including Leffe from Holland and Kilkenny from Ireland. A pint of each is $15AR. There are a host of whiskeys on offer as well, including a rather impressive range of single malts and Bourbons. A shot of Wild Turkey is $28AR, whereas an 18 year-old Glenfiddich goes for $100AR. The wine list is full of Argentinean delights priced between $16AR and $50AR. The Oldest also has an extensive restaurant menu. There’s typical pub grub like steak sandwiches and burgers from between $16AR and $19AR, as well as that local specialty picadas - a platter of cold cuts and cheeses - for between $28AR to $36AR, depending on size. There’s also a choice of excellent dinners, such as home made pastas, steaks and salads. The menu changes regularly and prices for an entrée is usually around the $25AR mark. Located in the south-western extremes of Belgrano, the Chacarita cemetery might only down the road, but there seems to be plenty of life left in The Oldest, yet! —The Oldest Public Resto Bar review by Johan Jensen
