So many bottles, so little time. Tancat creates the perfect mood for an evening beverage. Photo by Clare Nisbet.

It’s hard to believe such tranquility exists within a stone’s throw of bustling Florída street. Tancat is an intimate and beautiful space decorated with flattering low lighting, dots of orange paper lanterns, a wall of wine, a bar that stretches the length of the restaurant, and personal touches of business cards, newsprint wallpaper, old photos, jars and knick-knacks – all very easy on the eyes. The music is as romantic and moody as the atmosphere and the staff is absolutely delightful, making Tancat a perfect place for a first date or a lovers’ tryst.

Tancat offers an impressive Argentinean wine list and the staff will coax you to try it and make sure you adore it before you commit to a choice. They also offer more imported beers than most places in Buenos Aires. The bar is great for a quick glass of wine or for sophisticated solo diners. Just inside the door an array of daily dishes awaits you so that you can choose what looks delicious. The slightly pricey regular menu offers an array of porteño dishes that exhibit both Spanish and Italian influence: from omelets to cheese plates, salads to pastas, specialty fish dishes to indulgent chocolate mousse. The dishes are mostly tapas style and beg to be shared. Each day also has a unique specials menu with more elaborate and expensive dinner dishes – so don’t be afraid to hunker down in Tancat for several hours and a sumptuous meal.
