Alive with porteño spirit and offering all the traditional foods and flavors associated with Buenos Aires residents, Robesa is a charming little restaurant in the up and coming neighborhood of Almagro. Though somewhat unimpressive from the outside, the inside is full of bold colors that glow from the sunlight that enters through the huge windows. The near and far walls are yellow and red respectively with bottles of wine showcased along them. Either in stylish wooden wine racks or pure white shelves, what is surprising is the wine on display. Rather than being hugely expensive vintage bottles they are simply the everyday favorites of the owner. This lends a down-to-earth feel to the restaurant. In some ways this defines the restaurant. It is actually a restaurant where porteños go rather than offering an image of the culture of Buenos Aires. The menu is based around the traditional parilla of different meats, mostly beef and chicken. Both of these meats as well as some types of seafood are also available prepared in a variety of ways aside from the parilla. Also on offer are a number of fresh pastas, plus some pizzas and calzones. With the Argentine Rock Nacional playing in the background and the men playing cards in the corner this really is an authentic Argentine parilla, neither playing up to, nor refuting the traditional stereotype. —Robesa review by Paul Smithson
