The gramatically dubious and slightly confusing “CD’s” in ‘Notirous CD’s Bar’ refers to the fact that this jazz bar, centrally located in Recoleta, is also one of the city’s best record shops.  It’s certainly the most fancy- looking one.  The more than 60,000 available titles are searchable on fancy little computer terminals with space-aged chairs and desks, and with its steel and glass decór the whole place has an air of a utopian high-tech Jazz paradise.  A corridor adorned with cooler than cool portrais of Jazz legends leads to the back room which houses the bar itself.  It’s bright and über-modern without being clinical or cold.  Sleek grey walls, light parquet flooring and more of those cool portraits assures that the futuristic ambiance of the shop is retained.  Behind the low stage, a wall of glass opens up to an inviting, lushly over-grown garden patio.

Notorious has two functions aside from the record shop.  One is as a lunch restaurant and café where jazz lovers can hang out and dig the Coltrane and the Davies on the stereo.  The other, more important, is that of a premier live music venue.  Notorious hosts gigs virtually every night at nine.  Entrance fees vary between $10AR and $15AR, and headliners include international names as well as stars from the thriving local jazz scene.  Consult their website for comprehensive listings.  Reservations are recommended.

All the entries on the contemporary menu are named after jazz personalities or more spurious musical references.  For example, fans of Ray “Little Jazz” Eldridge might want to try the mozarella and ham crepe that carries his name, whilst classical music lovers might prefer the “Magic Flute”  gourmet sandwich with smoked ham, tomatoes and cheese, or why not the “Finlandia” gravadlax and brie salad.  Lunch entrees range between $12AR and $25AR.  Notorious offer wines from two bodegas, Fincas Las Moras and Trapiche.  A bottle costs from $15AR to $50AR.  Cocktails are $15AR, whilst champagne is available for between $35AR and $65AR.  Beers are from $6AR to $9AR per glass.
