![]() Under Mark's orange canopies in Palermo Viejo, shoppers will find rich coffees, American muffins, and Caesar salads. Photo by Gena Mavuli. Upon entering the chic Mark’s Deli and Coffee House, several things make it stand out from other Buenos Aires corner cafés:
1. Muffins and scones at the take-out counter - both generally unheard of in this city. Mark’s, as one can divine from the name, is a close to a US style lunch café as you can get. Located in trendy Palermo Viejo, this place is full of beautiful and well-dressed porteños, expats and high-budget travelers. Complete with big bowls of fresh Caeser salads ($10AR), sandwiches stuffed with roasted grilled veggies ($9AR) or chicken and guacamole ($12AR) served in wicker baskets, the food is comparable to any classy college town cafe in the USA. On a Sunday afternoon, the small dining room, long orange couch, and outdoor patio (complete with heaters during winter months) are full of people casually waiting for seats to open up. This, too, is a Buenos Aires rarity since there are hundreds of options in every neighborhood. Mark’s, however, is worth the wait. English language menus are available and will be automatically provided if you stroll in chattering in any foreign tongue. In true Buenos Aires style, the service is remarkably slow, requiring one to sit patiently chatting and enjoying the company/ Thankfully, some things never change. —Mark's Deli and Coffee House review by Gena Mavuli
