Buenos Aires, Argentina > Buenos Aires restaurants > Guayana GuayanaLima 27 (@ Avenida de Mayo); Tel. +(011.54.11) 4381.4350
The first thing that stands out about Guayana is how completely non-descript it is. Mismatched tables and chairs line the drab restaurant and chipping tiles provide hazards when walking to the bathroom. Everything on the walls from the tango murals to the posters proclaiming guest artists look like they have been hanging since the beginning of time. But there are a lot of reasons while Guayana has been going strong for almost 40 years. There are live shows every Friday and Saturday from 1-5am during which the crowd literally spills into the street. Guests will also have trouble finding a table on football game days when Porteños without tickets dash to their favorite friendly café for a hot meal and a television screen. The menu is pretty standard – offering pastas, sandwiches, salads, and a decent parilla menu. Nothing is particularly astounding but it is cheap and well-prepared and Guayana makes some of Buenos Aires’ most killer French fries if you like them fat and greasy. The Friday and Saturday music shows are tango, Argentinean folk, and free with any purchase. Get there early or get shut out by those who know a good thing when they see it. —Guayana review by Clare Nisbet
