Discover a taste of Russian and Ukrainian cooking at Ermak, a real gem of a restaurant in Almagro. With a devastating capacity of 12, this tiny restaurant feels like restaurants in someones living room. Accordingly, the food has an appropriately home-cooked feel to it too.

From the outside it looks like any other parilla and the scantly decorated inside does little to change this image. Apart from the Russian dolls in amongst the bottles behind the bar there is little that hints to the intriguing cuisine prepared in the miniscule kitchen at the back. The exception is a large, red, felt piece of material with gold lining and tassells hanging across the far well. It is intricately embroidered with symbols from Ukraine and Russia's political past. In addition - in terms of decoration - there are some simple paintings on the white walls and some old bottles of obscure Eastern European spirits by the bar.

The real joy of this odd little restaurant though is the menu. Mostly written in its mother tongue, it is a collection of scrumptious dishes from the region around Ukraine and Russia. There are some interesting pasta dishes and various styles of chicken on offer, with vegetarian options also available. Ask the waitress to explain the items on the menu that have no Spanish translation and she will be perfectly happy to describe them in detail. To finish the meal off why not have a trago of Russian vodka, the only way to really get in the spirit of things.
