Home to a large concentration of Peruvian immigrants, the Abasto/Once area boasts a number of restaurants that specialize in ceviches, anticuchos, and other distinct cuisines from the homeland of the Incas. El Rey is one of the best. Across the street and half a block from Abasto Shopping Center and situated beneath a bright red awning, this restaurant serves up ginormous portions of authentic Peruvian dishes at very reasonable prices.

Their ceviches (raw seafood “cooked” by the acidic lime juice it soaks in) and anticuchos (marinated, grilled meats), as mentioned above, are excellent. Tamal (similar to a tamale), papas de huancaina (steamed potatoes served with a special cream sauce), lomo saltado (steak stir-fried with peppers, onions and yucca, served over rice), and pollo a la brasa (char-broiled chicken) are can’t-miss options as well. A unique and delicious hot sauce is provided no matter the order, and Cusquena and Inca Kola, the signature Peruvian beer and soda, respectively, are available to cool the tongue and wash everything down. The interior is nothing special, but it’s plenty spacious, and the warm staff amplifies the comfort level. They deliver, too.
