In Buenos Aires, a corner café is a corner café is a corner café: all offering variety, space to take your time, and reliably good food. With homemade pastries and cookies in the window, El Galeon is just one more café but is always packed on Sunday afternoons, causing one to wonder what exactly makes it so special. Its location, a few blocks from Plaza Italia- the junction of the subway D-line and streams of busses, near the botanical garden, certainly is part of the charm. El Galeón also sits on the edge of one of the most residential, middle-class neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, another piece of the puzzle. The closing argument has to do with its variety and its claim to always be open and it seems that there is nothing on this menu one can’t find making it a popular place for families and late night munchie fans alike. Pizza is the specialty here, with all the expected varieties- muzzarella, prosciutto, veggie, onion, and nearly anything else one could want. ($12-$18/small). Homemade pastas are offered with a choice of sauces: four cheese, Bolognese, crème, or tomato ($10-16). Grilled lomo ($20), and pork chops ($16) are as rich and filling as anywhere in the city. Don’t forget desert- the widow display is temping with and abundance of homemade treats like flan, apple pie, and chocolate mouse. ($8-$10) This large and spacious cafe serves as a great place for getting that late-night cheese fix or for an afternoon tea and facturas (pastry) while gazing at the wooded Botanical Garden across the street, and stretching the day into evening in a nearly tourist-free true Buenos Aires neighborhood. —El Galeon review by Gena Mavuli
