Club del Bufón has it all: theater, restaurant, bar, and buena onda. Find it tucked behind the Abasto Shopping Mall. Photo by Clare Nisbet.

Behind the mammoth edifice that is Abasto Shopping Center hides a little treasure called Club del Bufón, an ambitious combination of resto-bar, theater, cafeconcert (a basement room where bands play) and art space. This family-owned establishment strives to be something of a bohemian Cheers. Both the proprietors and regular customers/ performers (emphasis on regular) are gente con onda, con corazón (people with a good vibe, with heart) contends Silvana, the owner. Indeed, if Silvana herself is to be taken as an example, this writer is inclined to believe her.

The small resto-bar serves standard fare like pizzas, sandwiches, and milanesas, very inexpensive drinks, and mate in the traditional fashion (gourd, metal straw or bombilla, and of course, the thermos full of hot water). Its walls are adorned with murals and paintings by local artists. This room leads into the small theater which hosts weekly shows for adults and children, the current headliner usually playing every Friday night at 10pm. Down the stairway to the right of the bar is the cafeconcert, a cramped, low-celinged room that hosts musical acts every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Though Club del Bufón is certainly dominated by regulars at the moment, no doubt in part because of its tucked-away location, it’s the kind of place that could explode with enough word-of-mouth advertisement. Whether or not that would take away from ithe currently charming atmosphere is debatable, but for now it has a lot to offer.
