It seems only fitting that the Madres should open their University, administrative offices, and bookstore overlooking the Plaza Congreso in the middle of downtown Buenos Aires. Here, in their modest headquarters, these brave women continue their 30-year quest for answers to what became of their children and grandchildren. A wander through the Plaza should be accompanied by a trip to their café and bookstore.

The café itself is a simple affair and consists of about 20 tables in front of the space dedicated to their bookstore. The food on offer is equally simple including hearty homemade tartas, empanadas, cakes, alfajores, and other coffee go-withs. There are a couple of larger lunch dishes on offer. The food is well priced and you would be pushed to spend more than $10AR or a meal and coffee.

The greatest thing about the café is certainly the vibe. Tables are in hot demand for such a simple place and one gets the feeling that to be a fly on the wall would be an experience. Everyone from University students, to debating intellectuals, to the Madres themselves makes it a great place to sit and take a break. In the Madres’ Café you will always feel like you are in great, revolutionary company.

When your coffee cup is empty, take a walk through their small yet impressive book offerings. Here you will find the greatest that leftist literature has to offer (in Spanish), with sections devoted to Marxism, El Che, as well as the Madres published volumes about their children and their philosophies. There is a well-chosen selection of fiction and political commentary. Another treat is the small CD rack with well-chosen revolutionary music.

The Madres often screen films and have speakers in this location. It is worth stopping by to see what is on the agenda. It is a humble place, fitting with the humble fight of the Madres. This is a cafe to lose yourself for a few hours and leave feeling they were spent in the best of company.
