The immensely popular Bar Unico in Palermo's drinking district has won many fans through a combination of its vibrant atmosphere and rock and roll attitude, achieving an aptly unique - or unico - vibe. Its décor would best be described as a mix of Spanish and American styles. Drinking paraphernalia is exhibited around the lower half of the walls while bare red bricks and colourful artwork share the upper area. The L-shaped bar dominates the relatively small area available, with several chairs and tables on the chequered floor surrounding it. It is a good idea to reserve ahead any day of the week to be assured of sitting at one of these, while at the weekend it is utterly essential. It can be quite crowded standing up around the bar so booking a table is a smart move - keep in mind this can only be done up until 10:30pm. During the warmer months of the year more tables are placed outside the front of the bar. Music-wise they play mainly rock from the 70s and 80s but some hip-hop and light electronic music also makes an appearance. This goes for every day except Sunday which is devoted solely to jazz. The drinks are all at a reasonable price considering the bars trendy location. In terms of beer it is great to be able to get a pint for just $7AR, while a trago costs between $8-10AR. This is especially good considering that this sometimes involves imported alcohol - Havana Club rum is used in the Cuba Libre. Food is also available. As well as the usual porteño selection of pastas and meats, there are other items on the menu such as chicken wings which are more obviously US-influenced. In general the bar is a firm favourite with young people because it is almost permanently open and serving drinks. —Bar Unico review by Paul Smithson
