There is something unexplainable about Bar Guevara that fills its two small floors with young bohemian types week in week out. Its barely decorated walls and loosely thrown together furniture give it the air of being some sort of converted garage and it may be just this effect that has made it such a huge success. There are only a few chairs and tables scattered around the downstairs area leaving more standing room than for sitting - an indication that one should not expect a seat unless you are very lucky. The upstairs is smaller and has even less seating so those with weary legs may do better at a different bar. At the back on the ground floor a small flight of stairs leads up to the tiny bar. It can be quite an obstacle course getting up there when the place gets really full, but security at the weekend does a good job in letting a suitable number of people in. While there is always a queue outside, it is rarely uncomfortably packed inside. Fridays and Saturdays are busy so try not to arrive too late, and on these two nights one has to pay $10AR at the door but this is merely a minimum consumption, and drinks are refreshingly cheap anyway. The DJ blasts out a selection of English and American music all night long, with the main thrust being Indie-rock and electronic music from the 80´s up to the present day. Do not expect the relentless pounding techno that fills most clubs in Buenos Aires, as the DJ at Bar Guevara is surprisingly well informed, with an impressive array of quality tunes at his disposal. The combination of cheap drinks, great music, and that unexplainable ingredient create an undisputable “buena onda” that draws the crowds in every week. —Bar Guevara review by Paul Smithson
