![]() Located in a renovated mansion, Alimentari serves up quick lunchtime favorites for the business crowd. Photo by Clare Nisbet The McDonald’s and Burger King culture has definitely landed in Buenos Aires so it’s refreshing to see that the porteños have their own alternative to American fast food in the form of Alimentari. Alimentari has five locations strategically placed throughout B.A.’s most bustling barrios. The only location to currently offer free WiFi is the location on San Martin but all signs point to the others following shortly. Alimentari is technologically aware in lots of ways – check their website for locations, menu, job opportunities, catering, their complete menu, and online ordering (how novel!). As a special treat for those unafraid to read in Spanish or visit babblefish.com, the website also offers recipes for some of their sinful Argentine deserts. The San Martin location looks like a renovated Parisian mansion and the gaudy purple paint might make you mourn for what once was but the juxtaposition of fast food and coffee to go with original wooden staircases is weird and wonderful. There are 3 (count ‘em – 3!) counters and rooms to chose from because the place is always jam packed with local businesspeople stopping by for coffee and cake or to grab a quick lunch. Options are simple and predictable but comprehensive: empanadas, daily pasta specials, salads, coffees, and cakes. The large portions of homemade tartas are particularly popular. This is a decent and affordable alternative to American fast food fare for the rushed and desperate lunchtime crowd. —Alimentari review by Clare Nisbet
