In a city of carnivores it’s sometimes a challenge to find the greener side of Argentine cuisine. Look no further. Tucked away on a quiet corner in the neighborhood of San Telmo, Abuela Pan not only bakes its own fresh multi grain breads daily but it’s also been serving up healthy vegetarian dishes using all natural organic ingredients to resident vegetarians since 1998. Dangling foliage and wooden shutters hint ever so slightly at the secret garden hidden beyond its tall and slender green rustic doors. An old fashioned bakery counter looks out over the small, bright restaurants area where five rout iron marble topped tables and chairs maintain an atmosphere as charming as an afternoon garden tea party. Antique watering cans and rakes decorate the lone brick wall and pleasant waves of music subtly fill the air. Enjoy one of the three lunch specials for $9.50AR which change daily and might include dishes such as burgol and vegetable hamburgers, vegetarian paella or broccoli and walnut crepes or stick to the staple menu items such as organic milenesas of soy or eggplant and raviolis with the sauce of the day. Homemade and healthy desserts like the apple tart and carrot budin with fruit compote also grace the menu for an incredibly reasonable $3AR. If the system is looking for some meat de-tox there are plenty of healthy and delicious options at this friendly neighborhood lunch spot. Be warned: Abuela Pan is only open on weekdays and the daily specials go quickly. —Abuela Pan review by Ellie Bowman
