Past hulking bouncers you must go: they, and the ominous red-lit, deep-blue exterior is all that will tell you the MOD club is before you. And somehow, even though from the outside it looks like a big box dwarfed between apartment blocks, MOD is both cavernous and labyrinthine. In addition to the sunken and spacious (when empty) dance floor are two opposing upstairs zones where small bars serve customers who prefer seclusion. A different sort of seclusion is afforded to the right of the entrance, beyond the velvet rope – a VIP section (although on the night of my visit it was fairly permeable and mainly acted as a barrier between seating and dancing). Entrance will generally set you back ten to twelve pesos, about the starting price of their selection of whiskeys. And take note: at this stage, M.O.D. is only open on Friday nights, although technically the doors open on Saturday morning. On the other nights of the week you’ll find a different branded evening with different music, and a different crowd. The early evening – that is, midnight – crowd may be treated to the music and video of some classic rock DVD as the drink coupons are devoured. But remember to ask for those coupons! Instead of asking, I lumbered to the bar, where the English speaking bartender was so abashed at their beer range (‘Budwesier... in a can’) that he offered two-for-one ($6AR). Once the music begins it is purely the business of rock and roll DJs. All selections are bent towards the danceable – from a little sideways shimmy through Lou Reed’s ‘Walk on the Wild Side’, to full on thrashing about for anything by The Rolling Stones. In an attempt to keep everyone happy and upbeat songs are often cut after the second chorus. Whether it is a regular occurrence or not, midway through the night the crowd was worked into a frenzy by a saxophone wielding hipster jamming along mid-song, and provoking a monstrous conga line. Look forward to plenty of Camel cigarette advertisements along with plenty of gorgeous bar-staff. —M.O.D. Club review by Murdoch Stephens
