When it comes to bars, and particularly names for bars, Kim Novak says hot like Carlos Gardel says tango. What would one expect from a two-room bar in Palermo Viejo with a name like that except that that its clientele be strictly partiers? Two seconds in the door, provided they’ve made it past the riff raff lurking out front, visitors realize there’s not a person in the place who doesn’t plan to have an epic night. The Novak crowd is for heads of all kinds. People arrive here drunk and flying to chill for a while before going big someplace else at 3am. Those who feel like getting weird should do it here. Here guests can not only make friends with a transvestite but maybe even get a tour of the all the bars where she can get you in free.

Couches and a bar make the small ground floor a good place to talk to people, and music makes the basement a good place to go when you get bored. The total capacity is probably 50, and the people here who don’t know each other tend to meet quickly. The bars are small but stock plenty of Fernet & Coke and Vodka & Speed. There may be Quilmes on tap, but not likely, and certainly not downstairs. An average cocktail won’t set you back more than about $10AR.

Think Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas meets Bar Fly. These people are lifers, but not high rollers. In this part of town, places that charge two pesos less per drink than the neighborhood average have vastly different clientele. If Plaza Serrano is in fashion, Bar Kim y Novak is for people who laugh at fashion, each person with her or his own reason for doing so. This diversity makes it interesting on both micro and macroscopic levels, fascinating while you’re there yet even more a head-trip when you compare it to any other place you may go to pre-party in Buenos Aires.
