Thelonious is a proper dark and smoky jazz club, with a shot of understated elegance and plenty of vibes. Make no mistake: this place is cool. Like a sax-playing wolf in sheep’s clothing it lurks on the second floor of an inconspicuous building in Palermo Viejo. Once inside there’s no doubting the hip-cat credentials, though. The long black bar that lines half the rectangular space is punctuated with illuminated glass tiles. All the walls are matt black and decorated only with huge arty light installations; all in black, of course. The chill out area’s so dark you just know it’s got to be good, and the stage is lit by a fancy and faint chandelier that looks like a cluster of melted, half-spent bulbs. High windows open up to a narrow balcony and admit the faint glow of the street lamps outside. As if all that wasn’t cool enough, you even have to ring a door bell to get in. It’s just got that jazz, man! And not just in mood and style. The music’s pretty hot too. Thelonious hosts gigs several days a week, featuring an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, and Afro-Latin rhythms. Tickets vary between $5AR and $12AR. It usually gets pretty crowded and as the night gets busy and the band hots up there are few better places in Buenos Aires to pass the night. The sleek bar is stocked with an abundance of booze, and the bar tenders stand by to mix up a very extensive choice of drinks. There are Champagne Cocktails for $14AR each; a whole host of high balls all the way from Cuba Libre to Long Island Iced Tea for $11AR-$13AR; or how about a frozen cocktail for $12AR? Options include Keith Richards, a blend of Vodka, lemon and sugar, keeping familiar friends, Margarita and Daiquiri, company. The list of Martini options is terrifyingly long with prices varying around the $13AR mark. For guests lucky enough to get a table a bottle of wine is always a popular choice. The wine list is far from exhaustive but respectable none the less. Reds and whites are between $21AR and $40AR, whereas a bottle of the sparkling stuff will set you back between $12AR and $43AR. A glass of house red is $6AR. —Thelonious Club review by Johan Jensen
