![]() A down-home bar in the middle of Caballito is Café Subasta, a well-known locals watering hole. Photo by Greg Roden Subasta is a big old nightspot in Caballito. With wooden floors, murky lighting, and a really long bar it's a bit like a saloon from some old western film. There’s even an old piano hiding in a corner. Thankfully there’s no spitoons to be seen, though. The large front room is lighter and arier with large windows and a plexiglass ceiling, but it retains the same rustic feel. Upstaris, there’s a pool room with two medium-sized, slightly worn tables. Despite the ageing look, Subasta attracts a youngish crowd and gets very busy on weekend nights. Thanks to its slightly out of the way location off Ave. Rivadavia it’s something of a hidden gem. Subasta’s menu includes a wealth of tasty bar snacks. The house specialty is, the “tabla subasta,” a mega plater of tacos, burritos, waffles, nachos, chips and more served with a massive 1,6 liter bottle of beer. A sturdy meal for a hungry ranch hand after a long ride across the range or maybe a sizeble group of friends. The whole lot costs $42AR. Individual orders of nachos and tacos cost between $6AR and $13AR, burgers and steak sandwiches are less than $10AR, whereas hot dogs cost $6AR each. Cocktails are available at about $12.50AR, but more in keeping with the cowboy theme, glasses of beer with a shot of gin or vodka are $6.50AR each. A straight up glass is $4.50AR. A glass of wine is also $4.50AR, whereas bottles vary between $8.50AR and $22AR. —Café de la Subasta review by Johan Jensen
