Teaching English in Buenos Aires

Many native English-speaking foreigners find that teaching English in Buenos Aires is a great way to supplement their vacation/living expenses. Qualified TEFL/TESL (Teaching of English as a Foreign/Second language) teachers will not have trouble finding work. Most of the larger language institutes offer English lessons as well as Spanish classes - those looking for work can call or email around to find those institutes that are currently hiring. The English Language Buenos Aires Herald Sunday edition also has a small Classifieds section with "Situations Vacant" which is used to advertise English teaching positions.

For those that are not certified: do not fret. There are plenty of ways to obtain teaching certification here in Buenos Aires and it is relatively inexpensive compared with similar programs in the US. Once you are qualified, this is a great way to meet locals and get a hands-on working experience in Argentina. Teachers can expect to make about $15AR per hour from institutes and up to double that for private students.

While teaching English is a great way to meet locals and be social, it is important to remember that you will be constantly speaking, working, interacting, learning, and making friends in English. Those who have come to South America to improve their Spanish may find it a gigantic drawback to be sucked into an entirely English-speaking world smack dab in the middle of Latin America.

The English language continues to be an important link between local businesses and visitors and there is currently a feverish frenzy for porteños to learn English. Everyone from businessmen to kiosco owners to taxi drivers and hotel personnel share the need and enthusiasm to interact in English.
