Two huge silver, brushed metal doors and suave Brazilian pop music greet guests in the minimal yet upscale lobby. A large collage portrait of Evita Perón made entirely out of small oddly shaped, sized and colored pieces of dried bread hangs in the entrance and is testament to the uniqueness of this truly boutique four star hotel situated in the heart of downtown Buenos Aires. Smooth concrete floors and super high ceilings lead visitors straight back to a round and slightly retro self-standing front desk where stylish hotel personal, dressed in hip uniforms, welcome visitors with friendly smiles.

A large open wood-planked metal staircase rises out of the lobby to split-level lounge areas above, surrounded by more giant collage portraits; including that of Argentine revolutionary Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevarra, made entirely out of real bullets aligned in an array as if at attention on top of a dark red background, filling in the shadowy face of the legendary icon. These unique and very cool themed portraits of famed Argentines are all made of some type of textured material that relates to each individual; that of Borges is made up entirely of different shaded pieces of cotton thread, and were bought as a collection from a local artist collective known as Mondongo.

Originally one of the first hotels in Buenos Aires formerly known as the Phoenix, the Esplendor was gutted and rebuilt from the ground up combining the old world charm that is the outside of the building with new world splendor and comfort to be enjoyed from within. The flagship hotel under management by the Fen Hotel Group, there is also a four star and critically acclaimed restaurant next-door bearing the same name. Fifty-seven rooms come in three varieties; Classic, Suites and VIP Suites, featuring in-room Jacuzzis to relax in and soak up the super high ceilings and the busy streets below. A quiet, modern, and clandestino getaway from the hustle and bustle that is Buenos Aires, the Esplendor is great option. Rooms start at around $100USD per night and promotional rates and discounts are often available.
