Buenos Aires Getaways

Historic Estancias (Ranches)

Several traditional estancias or ranches are available for day use and overnight guest lodging near San Antonio. This is as close as it gets to experiencing the Argentina gaucho or cowboy life first hand. Most offer all-inclusive packages that include lodging, meals, transportation and additional outdoor activities. Many travelers to Argentina use San Antonio as a rest and relaxation stop after traveling outside of Buenos Aires but before heading home and most recommend at least two nights stay on an estancia to let the beauty and tranquility really soak in. The following choices come recommended:

La Porteña
The original home of the G¸iraldes family, is this popular choice for tourists and porteños alike. The estancia also features a splendid garden designed by noted French architect Charles Thays, designer of several of the large parks in Buenos Aires as well as the beautiful botanical gardens near Plaza Italia in Palermo which are named after him.

La Bamba
Built in the 1830’s, this historic estancia, hosted famed tango signer Carlos Gardel many times as well as several other important Argentine celebrities. Aside from the traditional Argentine asado or BBQ, the ranch features English tea-time treats and a host of activities; from traditional gaucho shows and folkloric dancing and music to horseback riding, walks, drives in carriages (sulky), fishing, bird watching, and golf and tennis just 8km. away. (website also in English, German and French).

La Cinacina
A good option for those looking to experience the thrill of a real gaucho fiesta without having to shell out the bucks to stay over night. This traditional estancia features its dia del campo or ‘country day’ program jam packed with a traditional Argentine asado, music, gaucho demonstrations, drinks, dancing and dessert for $72AR/$36AR for kids. (music on this website is enough to picture life there)

El Ombá
This well-decorated lush pinkish and ivy-covered guest house features more of the same for both day-trippers as well as overnight guests. There is also a swimming pool with solarium; ping-pong; metegol (foosball), volleyball and football, bicycle rentals, and golf and tennis at a friendly country club only 15 away. Prices start at $50USD for the day program and are double that for overnight stays. El Ombá also offers air transfers from Buenos Aires directly to the grass field at the estancia for about $70USD per person. (website in English and German).
