The Teatro San Martín is a must-visit institution for those seeking a high dose of culture on their visit to Buenos Aires. The theater is housed in a gigantic, modern building on Avenida Corrientes – the street that never sleeps. Inside the lobby you can find listings for current programs, which vary year round and include photography exhibitions, dance and theater performances, impeccable cinema choices, and live music. The theater is part of a five-theater cooperative (the Complejo Teatral de Buenos Aires) that further includes the Teatro Presidente Alvear (on the next block of Corrientes), the Teatro Regio, Teatro de la Ribera, and Teatro Sarmiento. One of the greatest government-sponsored cultural programs at the Teatro San Martín is the film series. Be sure to stop by and pick up current listings. Films are always interesting and outlandish and movie lovers will relish the rare opportunity to see a Buster Keaton series, old westerns, or Japanese silent films. The privilege will set you back a mere $5AR per film. After buying tickets in the lobby, and taking the speedy elevator to the 10th floor where films are shown, be sure to check out the incredible bird’s eye view of Avenida Corrientes and its constant goings-on. From above, you get a rare glimpse of the Broadway-esque lights, street vendors, and performers. Foreign language films will typically be subtitled in Spanish – though it is always worth checking on any particular evening – but they often show English language films for nervous Spanish speakers. Those stopping by should take a moment to browse the current photography exhibit that is displayed on the first floor (and visible from the lobby). While the majority of exhibits are modern, Argentine photography, subjects do vary. Guided visits of the different rooms and workshops are also on offer from Tuesday-Friday at noon for just $4AR. It is not uncommon to walk by and glimpse live music and dancing in the lobby surrounded by a crowd of happy spectators. From ballet to Buster Keaton, the Teatro San Martín is worth stepping into whilst winding through the bright lights of Avenida Corrientes. With such excellent variety, price, and location, there is something to be found here for everyone. —Teatro San Martín | San Matín Theater review by Clare Nisbet
