Borges said, “Xul Solar es uno de los acontecimientos más singulares de nuestra época.” (Translation: Xul Solar is one of the most outstanding events of our time.) He also left great, vivid descriptions of his friend’s work despite the blindness that plagued his later years. This museum is small and an absolute must-see for lovers of surrealism or those interested in viewing a range of work by a single artist. The museum is in Recoleta, in a renovated portion of the building that contained the artist’s former residence. The residence itself is upstairs and is closed to visitors, but there are plans to open it as part of the exhibition in late 2006. The home has been untouched since the artist’s death, and the couple of photos available in the gallery provide insight into the daily life and work of Solar who was an artist, poet, and sometime architect. The renovated space feels like a cross between an Escher infinite regression painting and something you’d see at Legoland with its stairways leading nowhere, sheet rock walls, hardwood floors, and asymmetrical floor plan. The museum is home mostly to Solar’s weird and wonderful watercolors (about 100 pieces) but also includes some sculpture, sketches, and the coolest piano in the world – worth stopping by for and a steal at the price. —Museo Xul Solar review by Clare Nisbet
