Anyone who has ever tapped their toes to Por Una Cabeza or called themselves a tango aficionado should make a point of stopping by the Museo Mundial del Tango. The museum is located within the Academia Nacional del Tango next door to the famous Café Tortoni – so chances are visitors to Buenos Aires will be in the neighborhood. The Academia holds a library and live Tango shows amongst other services but the museum alone is worth visiting for.

The permanent exhibition is arranged chronologically spanning from the pre-tango days to more recent evolutions of the music. Each epoch has its own display case for viewing lyrics from famous songs of the time as well as relics from the past giving insight into the period. Highlights in the displays include old records, a gorgeous accordion, and old fashioned tango posters. In addition the museum holds two notable sculptures. Especially lucky visitors may catch a live piano performance during their walk through.

In addition to the chronological displays the museum has an exhibition room with rotating exhibits from relevant collages to digital photography. Past that you will find dapper smoking jackets of the masters that really set the mood. The final room dedicated to the tango greats and their sometimes-smiling faces look down from above. A jaunt through the museum takes no more than an hour and will only set you back $5AR. Carlos Gardel's hat should not be overlooked!
