20 years ago, the Feria de Mataderos (Mataderos Fair) brought the best of the pampas to the outskirts of the city – just an hour by bus from Microcentro and all the richness of Argentinean gaucho and folk culture awaits you. Every Sunday more than 100 artists and craftspeople cram the Mataderos barrio on the corner of Avenida Lisandro de la Torre and Avenida de los Corrales. Most people just get off the bus and follow the hypnotizing smell emanating from the parrillas.

The feria was established to bring a sense of tradition back to the city and this is mission accomplished. Happy visitors mix with kind locals in a veritable orgy of delicious homemade foods like killer empanadas, tamales, and asado topped with tempting cakes and sweets. Even the most budget-conscious travelers will find it tough to avoid splashing out on the well-priced goods available from leathers, woolens, gorgeous maté gourds, intricate metal carving, and unique works of art. Into the evening the music gets going and dancers kick up their feet. The schedule varies and guest artists change so check the website for updates. Folk dancing with traditional costume is colorful and lively – even hardened wallflowers will struggle not to join in. There are also gaucho games on display, making this a great day for the whole family and the long bus ride a very small price to pay for one of Buenos Aires’ best.
