![]() Designed by Clorindo Testo, the Biblioteca Nacional is an example of Buenos Aires' weird and wonderful architecture. Photo by Clare Nisbet. Apparently there were a great many problems leading up to the opening of the National Library in 1992. How else to explain the 30 years leading up to the inauguration? Tours are offered in Spanish daily except Sunday and they will tell you all about it. Designed by beloved Buenos Aires architect, Clorindo Testo, the building now begs the question: work of art or urban disaster? It’s worth taking a stroll through the Northern part of Recoleta to decide for yourself. The structure might remind visitors of an orange on a toothpick. However, it is surrounded on all sides by plazas and parks making it a peaceful rest stop, stowed with studious youngsters even on Saturday afternoons when they should be drinking mate and making party plans. If you are not visiting as part of the tour, maneuvering your way in requires identification and (horror) a purpose. If you are able to provide what’s needed, the downstairs security will direct you to your destination, however grudgingly. The views are a little underwhelming and, depending where you end up, you might not find it a great place to work. If you are looking for a quiet place to read, the adjoining Plaza del Lector is small, comfortable, and quiet. Despite the wear and tear and rough-around-the-edges staff, the library makes itself useful by hosting regular lecture, exhibitions and other literary-related events. Check website for upcoming events. —Biblioteca Nacional | National Library review by Clare Nisbet
